A GUIDE TO ITALIAN COFFEE

When it comes to coffee, we think it’s fair to say that Italian’s know a thing or two about it, but you certainly don’t have to be Italian to appreciate a good cup of coffee. Whether you prefer a strong shot, or a milky alternative – there’s always something to suit your taste. We’ve included some of our most popular options below; along with a couple of added extras for you to ask for next time you pay us a visit.

  1. Cappuccino

Although people say that the Cappuccino hit its peak a decade ago, for many, the cappuccino is their trusty go-to. In Italy, the drink is normally consumed at the beginning of the day for breakfast, as Italians see milk as almost a meal in itself, therefore a cappuccino in the morning with no other would be considered a complete breakfast! How to make: 1/3 espresso, 1/3 hot milk and 1/3 foamed milk – that’s all you need for the perfect cappuccino, but you still feel slightly peckish afterwards don’t worry we serve our deliciously crunchy amaretto biscuits to accompany.

  1. Macchiato

The Macchiato forms the basis of Italian coffee culture, and many people suggest it’s a subtle cross between an espresso and a cappuccino. As mentioned above, the cappuccino is typically popular amongst the morning drinker and therefore a macchiato gives the afternoon drinker the option of having less milk in their espresso for some extra flavour. How to make: Froth your milk to make a foamy texture, whilst adding a shot of espresso to your cup. Once you’re satisfied with the consistency of your frothed milk, use a spoon to add dollop of foam to the top.

  1. Espresso

Looking for that afternoon fix as you start to lose motivation on a Monday afternoon? Fear not, an espresso will be your new best friend. Espresso originated in Italy in 1901 when Luigi Bezzera created the first steam pressurised espresso system, since then the popular shot has been top of coffee-drinker’s agendas. Some of you may be surprised to learn that the rich and full-bodied espresso actually have less caffeine in than a cup of coffee!

  1. Affogato

You may not see this delicious dessert on our menu, but if you ask one of our friendly staff, we’re sure they’ll accommodate! The affogato is the ultimate simple Italian dessert, pouring a shot of beautiful coffee over a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream. Affogato actually means ‘drowned’ and now you know why!
