Decadent Desserts at Cucina Rustica to make life sweeter

Renowned for some of the best desserts, Italians know how to make a pudding! In Italy, ‘il dolce’ is not only a sweet way to end a lunch or dinner, it’s also the way many Italians start their day.Sweet treats and desserts are a part of the history of Italian food. And even for the most disciplined traveller, it is hard to say no to all the delicious temptations that await once in Italy. You will find that every bar, café or patisserie will offer an endless display of cookies, chocolates or some other sweet enticement. Italian desserts range in flavour from slightly bitter to sweet - usually not overwhelmingly sweet, and they are often best served with wine. Here at Cucina Rustica, located just off the leafy St Pauls Square in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, our Dolci menu offers an array of delicious traditional Italian sweet treats. We obviously love all of them but here are a few of our favourites...

TIRAMISU

As an authentic Italian restaurant, we weren’t going to leave this classic out of our top choices. The name ‘Tiramisu’ means ‘pick-me-up’ in Italian. This aptly named dessert gets this name from its high-energy content; eggs, sugar and, of course, the caffeine from the espresso coffee base. There are many different stories about the origin of Tiramisu and variations in the recipe. Here at Cucina Rustica, our tiramisu features sponge fingers soaked in espresso, layered with mascarpone cheese and cream. We finish it with a dusting of cocoa and drizzle of chocolate sauce. It’s creamy and full of delicious richness from the espresso; everything we love in a dessert. It’s your quintessential Italian dessert and a dream for coffee lovers.

PERA COTTA AL BAROLO

Red wine pears are a delicate dessert with an intense flavour. The spices used when poaching the pears in red wine make them particularly suitable as a dessert at the end of the meal. It’s especially comforting during the colder months. Our poached pear in Barolo wine is served with Amaretto ice-cream – the perfect combination of two of Italy’s great tipples.

GELATI MISTI

A favourite the world over! Italian ice cream is known as ‘gelato’. Containing more milk than cream, gelato freezes at a lower temperature. This means it tastes lighter and is arguably more refreshing. Churned slower than ice-cream, it is also denser and more intense in flavour. Our ‘Gelati Misti’ (medley of ice creams) comes in a variety of flavours. Take your pick from amaretto, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and pistachio.

SORBETTI

Sorbet is a non-dairy, frozen dessert made with puréed fruit or fruit juice mixed with water and sugar. Our Italian sorbets are the perfect end to your meal if you are looking for a lighter dessert, and they also make a great palette cleanser. Choose from our three delicious fruity flavours - lemon, apple and blackcurrant.

CROSTATA DI MELE

This is an Italian dessert in pure "grandmother" style! Our Crostata Di Mele apple cake is a slice of heaven, and perfect with a cup of coffee. Served with vanilla ice cream and caramel, this homely classic is another Italian favourite when it comes to desserts. It’s one of those cakes that seems to be liked by everyone.
