Everyone loves Italian food, whether it’s a delicious bowl of warm hearty pasta or a comforting cheesy pizza. Italians also give us another reason to love their cuisine, their desserts!

Most people know and love the famous Italian coffee based dessert, tiramisu. So we wanted to share with you our top tips on how to create the perfect tiramisu from the comfort of your own home.

1.According to Italians, eggs are paramount when it comes to creating the most authentic tiramisu, however, remember the eggs will be raw so make sure you’re buying ones that are fresh. Raw eggs aren’t suitable for small children or pregnant women so check with your guests first.

2.Choosing the right alcohol is key for a delicious and authentic tiramisu. Professional chefs use a choice of brandy, Marsala wine or even rum. We would typically use Marsala wine but any one of these will be equally delicious.

3.Using authentic Italian sponge fingers is a must. They are called Savoiardi and can be brought from most major supermarkets.

4.Coffee is one of the most important ingredients in the whole dessert so you need to be using the right blend. We recommend using espresso, however if you don’t have a coffee machine then cafetiere coffee will be just as enjoyable.

5.An authentic Italian tiramisu uses mascarpone cheese not just cream. Combining a mix of half and half will give a thick and creamy consistency. Just don’t count the calories!

6.There is no need to add orange extract. However, it could be used as a substitute for coffee to make it more of a family friendly dessert.

7.Once you’ve made your tiramisu, it is essential you chill it for at least an hour before serving. We would recommend leaving it in the fridge for up to 6 hours (if you have the time!) You can also keep it in the fridge for up to 2 days.

8.At Cucina we garnish our tiramisu with strawberries, which is a delicious combination with the chocolate and cream. It helps balance out the strong taste of coffee and alcohol as well.

Why not come in and try one of our classic Italian tiramisu’s and see how it compares to yours. It will be the perfect end to the perfect meal at Cucina Rustica!
